The IFTA Deadline Guide For Truckers
Well, what do you know? It’s that time again. Time to file your IFTA return, because the 4th quarter deadline, is today January 31. If you don’t file by midnight then you could have some scary IFTA penalties to deal with!
Luckily, you have TruckLogics, your trucking business management solution to help you quickly generate your quarterly IFTA report to help you quickly and easily complete your return. We will even cover the basics to make the process go even smoother.
The IFTA Deadline Guide For Truckers
IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement that was put into place by the lower 48 United States and 10 Canadian provinces for the purpose of simplifying the reporting of fuel use by qualifying motor vehicles that operate in two or more jurisdictions (states).
The IFTA return really helps, because before it was put into place each state had their own, complex rules and regulations for reporting fuel use, and it was a time-consuming hassle. IFTA really simplifies things as it reports the net tax refund due and to redistribute taxes from collecting states to states that are due.
You will need to apply for an IFTA license and keep it in your cab at all times. Then you will receive two IFTA decals that must be kept on your driver’s door at all times and will need to complete your IFTA return four times a year to comply with the law.
To complete your return you need the following information:
- The total miles traveled per jurisdiction.
- The total gallons of fuels consumed per jurisdiction
- The total tax paid on gallons of fuel purchased per jurisdiction, and
- The current tax rate per jurisdiction.
Your vehicle qualifies for IFTA if it:
- Has two axles and a registered gross weight of 26,000 pounds or more
- Has two axles and a registered gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more
- Has three or more axles regardless of weight, and/or
- Is used in combination and the combination exceeds 26,000 pounds in gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight.
