Don’t Make These 2290 Mistakes

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Season is almost here. It opens July 1st, which is on a Saturday, therefore the IRS will begin accepting Form 2290 on the next business day, July 3rd, which is Monday. You’ll probably be taking the 4th off to celebrate, but after that consider filing as soon as possible. The faster you file, the faster you’ll get your stamped Schedule 1.

However, when filing, be sure to avoid making simple mistakes that could result in your form getting rejected! Steer clear of these most common Heavy Vehicle Use Tax mistakes so your 2290 will be accepted the first time.

The Top 2290 Mistakes

1. You Need an EIN

Don’t forget about your EIN or Employer Identification Number, because you’re required to have one in order to complete your 2290 form. While it’s true that back in the day you could use your Social Security Number in place of your EIN that’s no longer the case. If you use your SNN your form will be rejected.

If you need an EIN don’t worry, you can easily get one by applying for one with the IRS online here. Just keep in mind that even though you’ll get your EIN instantly it will take about 15 days to update in the IRS’s system and your form could get rejected during that time.

2. Enter Your VIN correctly

A lot of forms get rejected for having the incorrect VIN or Vehicle Identification Number. Because VINs consist of 17 characters including both numbers and letters it can be really easy to enter a few of them incorrectly.

Get out your glasses to be able to clearly read your VIN and type it in slowly. Then double-check it to make sure it’s correct. If you’ve gotten your VIN wrong before then you might want to triple check it.

Luckily if your form does get rejected for having the incorrect VIN, ExpressTruckTax offers free VIN corrections so you can correct your form and retransmit it to the IRS in a snap.

3. Don’t Enter The Wrong Info

We know that taxes aren’t the most exciting thing in the world, that’s why people tend to rush through the filing process. That’s when things like entering the wrong tax year or name happens. If you transmit your form with a typo in your name then you’ll have to file a completely new 2290 form for a new Schedule 1.

Also, your business information for your EIN, such as the name and address needs to match what the IRS has on file. You can verify this information by contacting the IRS directly.
