In fact, you can go ahead and knock out your Form 2290 right now so you can get back to focusing on the road. Check out our filing tips to complete your form as fast as possible.

HVUT Form 2290 Filing Tips

1. Make Sure You Have Your EIN

You need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to complete your form. It’s how the IRS identifies your business entity. If you don’t have one apply online with the IRS for one immediately! It will take about 14 days for your new EIN to become updated in the IRS’s system, and your Form 2290 could get rejected during that time.

You can’t use your SSN (Social Security Number) in place of your EIN on your 2290 Form. If you place your SSN in the EIN field then your form will be instantly rejected. Also, if you already have an EIN it can be found on your previous stamped Schedule 1. If you forgot your EIN you can call the IRS and ask them for it.

2. You can’t pay the IRS with a credit card

Unfortunately, you can’t pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS with your debit card or credit card, because the IRS doesn’t accept them. You can pay with direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal by authorizing the IRS to draw the amount you owe from your bank account. You will need to provide your bank account number and routing number for this process, and that information can be found on one of your checks.

Also, you can schedule your payment with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System by creating an account and scheduling the payment at least by 8 PM the night before the deadline to give the IRS enough time to debit the amount you owe from your bank out.

You can also mail your payment directly to the IRS with a check or money order. Once you complete Form 2290 fill out page 2290-V (your payment voucher) from page 11, print it, and mail it with your payment.

3. Enter Your VIN correctly

The number one mistake made on Form 2290 is entering VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) incorrectly. Take your time with it, and double or triple check it to make sure you enter it correctly the first time. VINs consist of 17 alphanumeric characters, so they can be easy to mix up.

If you do enter your VIN incorrectly, don’t panic. You can quickly and easily make a free VIN correction with ExpressTruckTax.
