The IRS has officially started accepting Form 2290 for the 2022-23 tax year, which means it is now time to file Form 2290. All stamped Schedule 1’s from the 2021-22 tax year have officially expired as of June 30th. A current stamped Schedule 1 is required to get the vehicle’s tags and registration. A copy of the stamped Schdeule1 should be kept in the vehicle in case the driver gets pulled over and is asked to provide it.

What is Form 2290?

If a vehicle weighs 55,000 pounds or more, Form 2290 for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) must be filed. If a qualifying vehicle is driven less than 5,000 miles a year or less than 7,500 miles if it is used for agricultural purposes, the driver must still file Form 2290 with the IRS but will be exempt from paying the tax.

When is the Deadline to File Form 2290

The deadline to file Form 2290 is August 31st at midnight for qualifying vehicles that have been on the road for more than a year or are being put on the road for the first time this month. This time of year the IRS gets backed up so it is best to file Form 2290 as soon as possible.
