2022 Fourth Quarter IFTA Tax Rate Changes You Should Know
When you are preparing for your IFTA reporting deadline, it’s important to be aware of all the key factors involved in IFTA reporting. And the first thing is the IFTA tax rate changes.
Tax rates for IFTA will change often, and there are some changes for the fourth quarter of 2022.
Purpose of IFTA
IFTA stands for the International Fuel Tax Agreement, which was made by the 48 contiguous United States and 10 Canadian provinces with the intention of streamlining fuel usage by interstate motor vehicles.
The IFTA must be reported and filed quarterly to the base jurisdiction by all the applicable vehicles.
Are you required to file your IFTA?
Listed below are the requirements for whether or not you need to file IFTA for your vehicle:
- The vehicle weighs 26,000 pounds or more
- The vehicle has three or more axles
- The vehicle travels through two or more jurisdictions
If your vehicle meets these requirements, you are required to report and file IFTA. In order to do this, you must report the amount of fuel purchased, and miles traveled in each jurisdiction. Once you file this with your base jurisdiction, the taxes will be distributed to each jurisdiction fuel was purchased.
