How Will An IFTA Waiver Affect My Return?

TruckLogics provides online IFTA reporting
Attention truckers, you have a week to complete your IFTA return by the 3rd quarter deadline on October 31st, which is next Tuesday. That means the clock is ticking and it’s time to get your rear in gear. We would say don’t let IFTA sneak up on you, but at this point, it may already have.

We know IFTA can be confusing and complicated, but we are here to make it easier by answering a few of the most popular IFTA questions. We’re even covering the hurricane disaster relief IFTA waiver information.

Frequently Asked IFTA Questions

1. Do I Have An IFTA Waiver?

Hurricane Harvey and Irma disaster relief depended on truckers to deliver crucial supplies. As a result, many compliance regulations were suspended for helping delivering loads to disaster affected areas, including IFTA waivers.

The IFTA waivers meant that truckers didn’t need their IFTA license or decals while traveling through certain states to deliver hurricane relief supplies. The states offering waivers include Illinois, New Jersey, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Florida, Maryland, Michigan and more.

Each IFTA waiver is different depending on the state. Generally, the IFTA waiver is in effect for 30 days once it’s signed. Alabama's IFTA waiver was signed on August 31st so it ended on September 30th. Tennessee’s begin on September 12th and ended on October 12th.

The IFTA deadline for most states remains intact on October 31st. The best way to gain information about the waiver and the deadline in your jurisdiction is to call a local DMV office.

2. Do I need An IFTA License?

If you operate an IFTA vehicle in at least 2 IFTA jurisdictions then you need an IFTA license and two decals which will be issued by your base jurisdiction once you apply for them. Your base jurisdiction is your home state where your vehicle is registered.

Make sure you carry your IFTA license in your cab at all times and place your decals under your window on your driver’s side door.

3. What is an IFTA Qualified Motor Vehicle?

An IFTA qualified motor vehicle is a vehicle used, designed, or maintained for the transportation of people or property and has two axles and a registered gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more, has 3 axles regardless of weight, or a vehicle used in combination with a weight that exceeds 26,000 pounds.

4. What Is A Trip Permit?

A trip permit is issued by states you are not registered to travel in. They allow you to travel temporarily in that state without facing penalties. Each state has their own regulations regarding trip permits and you will need to get one from a local DMV office in the state you need to travel in.
