The HVUT Form 2290 Deadline Is Here!

HVUT Form 2290 Deadline
Whoa, the deadline is here! Your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 is due today, August 31st. You have officially run out of time to procrastinate! You need to file today in order to avoid getting hit with major penalties.

However, you don’t need to panic or rush. You can actually file from any location in 5 minutes or less with ExpressTruckTax, the number 1 IRS authorized e-file provider in the industry. In fact, you can go ahead and knock out your Form 2290 right now so you can get back to focusing on the road. Check out our filing tips to complete your form as fast as possible.

HVUT Form 2290 Filing Tips

1. Make Sure You Have Your EIN

You need an EIN or Employer Identification number to complete your form. It’s how the IRS identifies your business entity. If you don’t have one apply online with the IRS for one immediately! It will take about 14 days for your new EIN to become updated in the IRS’s system, and your Form 2290 could get rejected during that time.

You can’t use your SSN (Social Security Number) in place of your EIN on your 2290 Form. If you place your SSN in the EIN field then your form will be instantly rejected. Also, if you already have an EIN it can be found on your previous stamped Schedule 1. If you forgot your EIN you can call the IRS and ask them for it.

2. You can’t pay the IRS with a credit card

Unfortunately, you can’t pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS with your debit card or credit card, because the IRS doesn’t accept them. You can pay with direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal by authorizing the IRS to draw the amount you owe from your bank account. You will need to provide your bank account number and routing number for this process, and that information can be found on one of your checks.

Also, you can schedule your payment with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System by creating an account and scheduling the payment at least by 8 PM the night before the deadline to give the IRS enough time to debit the amount you owe from your bank out.

You can also mail your payment directly to the IRS with a check or money order. Once you complete Form 2290 fill out page 2290-V (your payment voucher) from page 11, print it, and mail it with your payment.

3. Enter Your VIN correctly
E-File HVUT Form 2290 Online

The number one mistake made on Form 2290 is entering VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) incorrectly. Take your time with it, and double or triple check it to make sure you enter it correctly the first time. VINs consist of 17 alphanumeric characters, so they can be easy to mix up.

If you do enter your VIN incorrectly, don’t panic. You can quickly and easily make a free VIN correction with ExpressTruckTax.

4. File With ExpressTruckTax or TSNAmerica

Head to ExpressTruckTax.com and follow their step-by-step e-filing guide to instantly complete your HVUT Form 2290! As a result, you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 within 15 minutes.

If you’re on the road, you don’t need to find a computer or IRS office to file. Simply download the ExpressTruckTax mobile app to your smartphone or tablet to file at any time, right from the comfort of your own cab.

The easiest way to file is by calling TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a local US-based support representative file for you, over the phone. Just spend a few minutes answering a couple questions to knock out your Form 2290 and to receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

We hope you’re having a great time at GATS, The Great American Trucking Show, which begins today. While you celebrate the trucking industry and enjoy your well-earned break keep in mind that your HVUT Form 2290 is due next Thursday, on August 31st.

Now you don’t have to panic, and can actually even file Form 2290 while you’re attending GATS because the process can be completed in five minutes or less with ExpressTruckTax. Trust us, it’s easy!

How To Quickly File HVUT Form 2290

You’ll start by heading to ExpressTruckTax.com or by downloading the ExpressTruckTax app to your smartphone or tablet if you would rather file on your mobile device. Then you will create your free account and can follow the step-by-step instructions to instantly complete the filing process.

You will be asked to enter your business information, including your business name, address, and EIN (Employee Identification Number). If you’re a sole proprietor you can use your personal information, but you will still need an EIN.

Next, you will choose your tax year and first used month. The current tax period began on July 1, 2017 and will end on June 30, 2018. If you first drove your truck in July then that makes it the first used month for the current HVUT period.

After that, you will enter information for your vehicles such as the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and taxable gross weight. Also, this is where you will select if your vehicle was used for any special purposes, such as logging or agricultural purposes. Remember, you’re required to include your suspended vehicles on your 2290 form.

Then you will select your payment method to pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS. ExpressTruckTax will accurately calculate that amount for you, so don’t worry about doing any math. You can pay the amount you owe via direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, EFTPS, or check or money order.

Before you transmit your return to the IRS ExpressTruckTax will perform an internal audit check to make sure your form is free of any basic errors. You will also be presented with a summary of your information so you can double check it and make sure everything was entered in correctly. Check your VIN, name, and etc, so you won’t have to correct any information on your form later.

Next, you will pay for your form and sign your form with a 5 digit number of your choice at the bottom of the page to transmit it directly to the IRS. Then within about 15 minutes, depending on IRS volume, you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email. Then you can finally relax!

For a faster, more convenient way to file give TSNAmerica a call at 803.386.0320 to have a US-based representative file for you, over the phone. All you have to do is make one simple phone call to quickly handle all your Form 2290 needs, and as a result, you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

Whats Happens If You Don't File HVUT Form 2290

2290 late filing penalties
The August 31 deadline to file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 is almost here. You have 2 weeks left to file in time, so you better get to it. There are penalties that you will have to face if you fail to file and if you don't make a full HVUT payment by the deadline.

Even though you have a little time left to file we urge you to go ahead and file today online with ExpressTruckTax, because if your form has an error or gets rejected it is solely up to you to correct it and retransmit it by the deadline or it will be considered late.

Also, if you think you can get by without filing at all, think again!

What Happens If I File Late/Not At All

If your form is late or you fail to file at all you will face a penalty of 4.5% of the total amount of HVUT you owe. This amount will accrue on a monthly basis for up to five months. Plus, if you fail to make a HVUT payment by the deadline you’ll face a monthly fee of 0.5%. On top of all of that, you will face an additional interest charge of .54%. These penalties will make the amount you owe sky rocket!

If you don’t file by the deadline or fail to file at all then you won’t have a copy of your stamped Schedule 1, which serves as proof of payment. You need your stamped Schedule 1 in order to register new vehicles and to renew your tags with the DMV. Without it, you’ll be operating illegally and just imagine to hassle of getting pulled over and trying to explain expired tags. Plus, your registration may be suspended.

Now if you forget to file your HVUT, don’t panic. You may not be penalized if you can show reasonable cause for filing late, or why your payment is late. Simply file as soon as you can and attach an explanation for filing late to your return. The IRS will then either accept or reject your explanation as reasonable cause. There are also penalties for filing fraudulent or false returns.

About HVUT

If you’re a trucker with a vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more then you’re legally required to file Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290. This tax is assessed on the amount of time heavy vehicles are spent on public highways during the tax period and the taxes collected are used to repair, maintain, and construct public highways.

2290 Form late payment penalty
All you need to complete your Form 2290 is your business name, address, and EIN (Employer Identification Number), and the details of an authorized signatory. For your vehicles, you will need the taxable gross weight and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

Now the filing process is actually pretty easy. All you have to do is head to ExpressTruckTax and follow their e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. The entire process is quick and convenient. You’ll receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email within 15 minutes of filing.

If you don’t have a computer, don’t worry. You can download the ExpressTruckTax app on your smartphone or tablet to file at any time, from any location. This is one extremely easy way to file if you’re out on a trip.

However, the easiest way to file is to call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have one of their dedicated, US-based representative files for you over the phone. As a result, you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

How To Make Free VIN Corrections On Form 2290

No body is perfect and we all make mistakes. Sometimes a lot of people make the same mistake. We know this because the number one mistake made on Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 is entering VINs incorrectly.

Now if you enter your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) incorrectly then your stamped Schedule 1 will have the incorrect VIN and you will have to explain why to the DMV, which could result in time-consuming stress and headaches. Or your form could be rejected altogether, so if you make a VIN error learn how to quickly correct it for free.

How To Make A VIN Correction

If you want to avoid making a VIN correction then take your time while entering it. VINs are made up of 17 characters that include both letters and numbers, so no wonder they’re easy to mess up. After you enter it be sure to double or maybe even triple check it to make sure that it’s correct. Also, remember that the letters ‘I’, ‘O’, and ‘Q’ will not be in your VIN, so those are actually ‘1’ and ‘0’.

The first rule of VIN corrections is not to panic. If you filed with ExpressTruckTax you can quickly and easily make a VIN correction for free, so you can get your stamped Schedule 1 corrected or retransmit your form to the IRS. If you filed with another provider you can file a VIN correction for a small fee.

To get started with your VIN correction log in to your ExpressTruckTax account and choose ‘Start New Return’ then click ‘Form 2290 Amendments’ after that you will click ‘Form 2290 VIN Correction’.

Then it’s smooth sailing from there because all you have to do is follow the simple step-by-step guide to complete your VIN correction and receive your corrected stamped Schedule 1 within minutes via email. This will save your tail at the DMV and help you get your corrected 2290 form retransmitted to the IRS by the August 31st deadline.

Other amendments you can make with ExpressTruckTax include if the weight of your vehicle increased during the tax period and if your suspended vehicles exceeded the mileage limit during the tax period.

Remember a suspended vehicle is one that does not exceed 5,000 miles (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period. If you exceed that mileage limit then you need to amend your Form 2290.

How to File Form 2290

When you’re ready to file, and you should be because time is running out, head to ExpressTruckTax to file your form instantly. Just follow the e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. Then you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email within about 15 minutes.

Don’t have a computer? No problem. Use the ExpressTruckTax App on your smartphone or tablet to file from any location at any time. This means that you can handle all of your 2290 needs from the comfort of your own cab.

You could also have a representative file for you over the phone by calling TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320. With one quick call, you can have your Form 2290 filed and you’ll get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email. What could be easier?

Important: The HVUT 2290 Deadline Is Coming!

You probably feel pretty relaxed towards your 2290. It isn’t even due until August 31st! That gives you plenty of time to file right? Well, actually maybe not! It’s already August, meaning the deadline is less than a month away!

This doesn’t mean that it’s time to panic. Instead, you can head to ExpressTruckTax to quickly e-file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 today. As a result, you’ll instantly receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

TruckLogics is here to help you out by providing you with a few e-filing tips for you to keep in mind as you prepare to file.

Tips For Filing Your 2290

1. If you aren’t sure if you’re required to file or not remember that if you’re a trucker with a vehicle that’s required to be registered under your name under state, Canadian, and Mexican law with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more then you’re required to file HVUT Form 2290.

As a result, you will get your stamped Schedule 1 which serves as your proof of filing. You need your stamped Schedule 1 to register new vehicles and to renew your tags. Without it, you might as well just stayed parked, because you will be operating illegally.

2. Remember you need an EIN (Employer Identification Number) to file. If you use your SNN in place of your EIN your form will get rejected, and with the deadline right around the corner, you don’t have time for form rejections!

If you need an EIN go apply for one online with the IRS now. Even though once you apply you’ll instantly receive your new EIN, it doesn’t mean you can file because it takes about 15 days to update in the IRS’s system, and your Form 2290 can be rejected during this time.

3. Enter your information slowly and carefully. Entering VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) incorrectly is actually the most common 2290 mistake. Since they consist of 17 characters that include numbers and letters they can be easy to mix up. I, O, and Q are letters that are not included in your VIN, so an I is a 1 and an O is a 0.

Double check your information to make sure that it’s all entered correctly. If you have an error in your name on your Form 2290, then you’ll have that error on your stamped Schedule 1, then you will have to file and pay your HVUT all over again to get a new stamped Schedule 1.

Sometimes you can call the IRS in time and ask them to apply your payment to your second Form 2290 after explaining what happened, but who wants to deal with all that? It's much easier to get it right the first time.

4. When you’re ready to file head to ExpressTruckTax and follow the step-by-step instructions to instantly complete your form. Then you’ll receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email. If you are out on the road without a computer, don’t worry. You can use the free to download ExpressTruckTax App to file from your smartphone or tablet from any location.

You can also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to have a dedicated 2290 expert file for you over the phone. You don’t have to do anything but make one simple phone call to complete your Form 2290 and receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.
