Introducing HVUT Form 8849

It’s no secret that tax time comes with questions. We find ourselves wondering what forms are due, and when, and how to e-file them. When it comes to Form 2290 you may see Form 8849 associated with it, but what the heck is Form 8849?! What does it have to do with Form 2290?! Form 8849 actually is involved with getting credits or refunds for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) you’ve paid.

Form 8849

We will start from the very beginning. Form 8849 is the Claim or Refund of Excise Taxes Form. It’s used to claim credits on refunds for vehicles included on your 2290 that were stolen, sold, or destroyed. It’s also used to claim credits or refunds for suspended vehicles, meaning vehicles that were driven for less than 5,000 miles on public highways (less than 7,500 for agricultural vehicles.) during the tax period.

Form 8849 ties into Form 2290 because it’s to claim credits or a refund on excise taxes. Excise taxes are taxes paid on goods when they’re purchased. These taxes are usually included in the price of the good. One example of an excise tax is gasoline, which comes into play with your quarterly IFTA report. Excises taxes can also be included on activities like when heavy vehicles use public highways.

Aha! Now you see the connection since all owners qualifying heavy vehicles of 55,000 pounds or more have to file their 2290 on an annual basis in order to get a copy of their stamped Schedule 1.

Just remember that you have to file Form 2290 and pay the full amount of Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes you owe before you can file Form 8849.

To file Form 8849 check out our sister company ExpressTruckTax and follow the step-by-step e-filing guide. All you need to file is your name, address, and EIN or Employee Identification Number. You should have an EIN if you’ve already filed your 2290 because you need one to complete your form.

If you haven’t filed your 2290 and you need an EIN then you can apply for one with the IRS online. Just remember that it takes about 15 days for your EIN to become active in the system.

Also, when filing Form 8849 you will need the information you’re claiming credits or a refund on with details as to why. For example, mention if the vehicle was stolen, sold, or destroyed and include the date that the incident occurred.
