The Right Way to Care for Your Truck

Your truck is your life, making the task of caring for it pretty important. So whether you’re a newbie just starting out in the business, or you're a seasoned road warrior, we have some tips to help keep your truck roadworthy!

Tip #1: Upkeep and Maintenance

Just like all vehicles, regular upkeep and scheduled maintenance is important. The wear and tear you experience on the road after so many hours can really take a toll on the well-being and usability of your vehicle. So to ensure that your truck makes it for the long haul, schedule your preventive maintenance every 13,000 to 15,000 miles. And if you need help scheduling and remembering your maintenance, TruckLogics, and our partners at RigMinders can help you out! We have all the right features to keep you and your truck running right.

Tip #2: Tires

Tires are costly, especially if you have to buy 18 of them.  But if your tires are wearing prematurely did you know that it could actually tell a lot about the condition of your truck? Look at it this way, if you just recently bought a new set of tires and they’re already wearing—it could be a sign of misalignment of an axle, poor suspension, or steering components.

Also, be sure to watch the tires on your trailer. Oftentimes, trailer tires are not properly maintained, so make sure you give them a good once over on your route or have the trailer realigned.

Tip #3: Wash it

Now sure, everyone loves a clean truck! But there’s a good reason for keeping it clean, besides just the cosmetics. When your truck is clean, you’re able to notice more dents or scratches, letting you get them fixed before rust settles in. A clean truck also helps protect the paint and keep it in good condition. Cleaning is a simple step you can do to keep from having to shell more money out of your pocket later on.

Tip #4: Learn Your Truck

Not just any oil or even washer fluid for that matter can go into your truck. Not understanding your vehicle, knowing what the gages mean, or being able to read the gages can cause real damage to your truck. Do yourself and your truck a favor, and take some time to learn the ins and outs of your truck.

Tip #5 Baby It

Everybody has that one friend who absolutely babies his truck. He shuts the door nicely, keeps it clean, never wears the brakes out, and takes his time going up a hill. Although your friend might seem like he cares a little too much for his truck, he probably understands the more care he puts in now, the longer his truck will last. Which brings us to our final point of taking care of and treating your truck well. Don’t wear down the brakes by trying to make last minute stops all the time, make sure it stays clean, and know that the better you take of it, the more money it will save you.

So truckers, before you head out on your next big haul, keep these tips in the back of your mind. We promise they’ll save you plenty of time and money.
