5 Tips for Passing Roadcheck 2015

The annual Roadcheck is back, y’all!

And this year is all about cargo securement. Well that and the annual Standard Level I inspection that the CVSA does every year to keep our roadways safer.

Now we know that the whole process may seem a little bit overwhelming, especially when you consider that the Standard Level I Inspection is a 37-Step process that examines both you and your truck. But rest assured, that we’ve got your back with 5 awesome tips to help you pass your roadcheck with flying colors!

5. Make A Checklist, Check it Twice

The Standard Level I Inspection checks both the driver and the vehicle. This means there are a few items the CVSA expects you to have on your person.

For the inspection you will need to have:

  • Your Driver’s License
  • Any endorsements you may have
  • Your Medical Card
  • Your hours-of-service documentation

The CVSA will also be inspecting you for seat-belt usage and checking to make certain you and other drivers never operate a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Easy, right?

4. Know Your Vehicle

The second half of the Standard Level I Inspection will center around the vehicle. Now, while you should always know everything that goes on with your vehicle, and not just once a year, there are a few specific things the CVSA is going to look at.

Know about and fix any issues with your vehicle’s:

  • Cargo securement*, Braking system, Coupling devices, Exhaust system, Frame, Lights, Safe loading, Steering mechanism, Drive line, Suspension, Tires, Open-top trailer body, Wheels and rims, Windshield wipers

And, if you’re driving a bus, your emergency exit will be inspected

*Cargo securement is the main focus of Roadcheck 2015, so be prepared!

3. Keep Calm and Drive On

Now that you know what you need to have and what the CVSA will be inspecting on your vehicle, we’ll examine one of the most common mistakes—being nervous!

The biggest mistake you could make in any inspection is being nervous about someone inspecting your vehicle. The Annual Roadcheck is just a precautionary inspection to make certain that roadways stay safe.

You know your vehicle is safe, and you should be able trust that it is up to code and can pass any inspection. So no worries! Keep calm and don’t let those inspections get you down.

2. You Shall (Not) Pass

Even if you don’t pass and your vehicle is found with some faults, don’t take it as an insult; use it as a learning experience! Besides, it’s a 37-Step Inspection, there’s a good chance there could be some minor issues, but it’s all in the name of keeping you and everyone else safe.

In fact, The Annual Roadcheck has saved an estimated 318 lives and prevented over 5,000 roadway injuries and accidents. That’s a lot of people!

Remember not to worry so much about minor issues. Everybody misses stuff sometimes and no one is perfect...not even your truck!

1. Stay On-Top of Truck Maintenance!

The number one thing you need to remember is to keep your truck properly maintained! You shouldn’t wait a year before doing some much needed maintenance on your truck.

Trucking Nation Podcast: 20. Trucker Apps for Summer, HVUT, & The Sugar Effect

How are you, Trucking Nation? I hope the road is treating you particularly well these past few weeks. I have doing a bit of research - as one does when wanting to learn a few things - and I have found, tested, and now reviewed the best apps for truckers to have this summer. I also got to see the new Mad Max: Fury Road and I just had to talk about it for a few minutes. Have you seen it yet? It's amazing and seeing a semi-truck rip it up through the desert is thoroughly entertaining. I highly recommend it for every trucker. Okay, enough gushing over the movie, click that play button and enjoy the show!

Here's The Breakdown

Best Apps for Truckers | Summer 2015
Truckers, y'all have a lot going on this summer and there are some great apps to help you out. These apps are super easy to use and they are all free.

IFTA Tax Calculator - available on Apple and Google Play

Form 2290 Tax Calculator - available on Apple and Google Play

ExpressTruckTax App - available on Apple and Google Play

FMCSA Rules and Regulations - available on Apple and Google Play

Find out more about these apps on the Summer's Hottest Trucking Apps blog.

Get Ready for the 2290 HVUT Season
If you are unfamiliar with the 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, let me fill you in. It's an annual road tax that usually costs a lot of money and most truckers have to file every year. You know, it's that thing you have to file to get that Stamped Schedule 1 form so you can update your tags and stay compliant. Well if you need more info head on over to ExpressTruckTax.com and contact the ETT Support Crew and they will tell you all about it.

For most truckers this tax is pretty expensive at around $550. Filing season doesn't start just yet - I'll give you an update when you can e-file with ExpressTruckTax -but right now is the perfect time to start planning this expense and have all your information entered into your ExpressTruckTax account.

The Sugar Effect
If you have been following my podcasts, then you know the second half is dedicated to trucker health & fitness. Not too long ago, I was searching for something on Netflix and came across the Fed Up documentary. I'm telling you, if you are having a problem getting the weight off, or just always feeling sluggish and slow and just not great, this documentary could really open your eyes to the reason why. It's sugar - an outstanding amount of sugar - that has been introduced into everything you eat - for the most part. Processed sugars have a horrible effect on the body and cause you to lose all energy and really pack on the pounds. It really is worth it to watch and see how our food has changed and why the American population as a whole is getting bigger and how to start cutting the sugar out of your everyday diet.

Follow all the podcast fun on our Facebook page - Trucking Nation Podcast.

TruckLogics: Packages Now Available for Leased Operators

At TruckLogics, we understand that as a leased operator it can be a hassle to keep track of your daily operations. Management programs are a great way to stay organized and make your job less stressful, but most of them can get pretty pricey.

That's why we've released a new subscription package just for leased operators! TruckLogics for Leased Operators comes loaded with all of the features you need and none of the ones you don't!

For less than eight bucks a month, the leased package will help you:

  • Keep accurate and organized compliance records
  • Track all your equipment maintenance
  • Manage your income and expense accounts
  • Create and view monthly or annual profit/loss reports
  • Add and keep settlements on record by uploading them as a PDF file
  • View and keep track of fuel expenses

And if you’re a leased operator considering getting your own authority, this package is a great way to transition into more professional, thorough recordkeeping. You can even switch to the owner-operator package later if you need to.

Let’s take a closer look at everything the leased operator package has to offer, and see for yourself just how much simpler it can make your day-to-day operations.

Features for Leased Operators

The Dashboard:

Upon first logging in, you’ll see a Dashboard, the core of your TruckLogics account. It provides:

  • A structured overview of your business
  • A Revenue graph with your income/expense/profit details from the past three months
  • Any Past Due Maintenance
  • All Upcoming Maintenance

Settlements:

The Settlements feature helps you keep track of your income, as well as any hauling charges, fuel surcharges, accessorial fees, reimbursements, and deductions. Trip documents can also be uploaded here, including equipment information, photos of receipts, and more.

Fuel Up:

The fuel up tool is where you can input all of your fuel expenses. The fuel expenses will show the date of purchase, state of purchase, total gallons of fuel, and the cost for each transaction. You can even take a snapshot of the receipt and upload it to be saved with the transaction details.

Maintenance Reminders:

Get automatic reminders when trucks and trailers need maintenance. It’s as simple as scheduling all upcoming maintenance and selecting the tasks from our preloaded list. Once you save a maintenance task, TruckLogics takes care of the rest and automatically reminds you each time the task is needed in the future.

Reports:

Possibly the most useful of all of the tools, the Reports tool lets you run profit/loss reports so you know where your business stands at all times. These organized financial reports are also helpful for end-of-year taxes, and can be emailed to your tax preparer at the end of the year.

Trucking Nation Podcast: 19. RigMinder App, IFTA Audits, & Staying Hydrated

I only get to say this once a year - May the fourth be with you, Trucking Nation. I've loved Star Wars since I was itty bitty and Star Wars Day (May 4th) is always fun. I celebrate by sitting way to close to the TV with a big bowl of popcorn and watch The Empire Strikes Back. I'm a total child but I'm ok with it. I'll move on now - hopefully I haven't embarrased myself too much - to the actual topic of this blog and that is an amazing podcast.

For this week's show, I have a great App review for you and some vital information about IFTA Audits. You know I have to talk about health and fitness and this week it's all about staying hydrated. So don't deprive yourself of the excitement that awaits...click that Play button.

Here's The Rundown

RigMinder App
Do you ever forget things? Happens to me all the time. There is a great App that has been specifically designed for truckers to help them remember all those deadlines. You all have a lot to remember, and it's a bit obnoxious, but you can have it all under control with the RigMinder App. It's super easy to use and already has a very extensive list of deadlines for you to set and you can even customize and add your own. It is free to download on all Android and iOS devices. Never forget your deadlines!

IFTA Audit
Every driver with an IFTA license has the chance of being selected for an IFTA Audit. Three percent (3%) of IFTA license holders must be audited every year according the IFTA rules. Some can be randomly selected, others may be chosen for specific reasons. The IFTA Audit process isn't so bad and you are presented with all the information beforehand. Check out this blog - IFTA Audit Crash Course - for more information on how it all goes down.

Staying Hydrated
It has been mentioned that the majority of truckers are dehydrated and they don't even know it. When was the last time you had some good ol' H2O? Do you have to think about it? Then my dear, it's been too long. You have probably heard that we need eight 8oz glasses of water a day, but you actually need closer to a gallon. Best suggestion is to get a gallon jug of water and drink it throughout the day - total body builder style. Drinking water isn't the only way to hydrate; eating fruits and vegetables is a great way to get more water in your body.

There was a bit more in the show and it's much more entertaining than this blog. Thank you so much for listening and be sure to stop by and like our Trucking Nation Facebook Page. Remember my dearest Trucking Nation, you get what you give in this world, so try to be kind and enjoy the ride. I'll talk to you next week - Misty Noel.

Keep an Eye on Your Bottom Line with TruckLogics' Easy Reporting Feature

The transportation nation can be all about those reports...after report...after report, leaving no time for anything else! But here at TruckLogics, we want to free you from the mounds of paperwork and introduce you to our paperless solution.

TruckLogics’ web-based program has everything you need to manage your fleet or your vehicle. From Profit & Loss Reports, to Unit Reports, and even IFTA reports-- it’s all in one place with just a few clicks of a mouse!

Profit & Loss Reports

The star of TruckLogics’ Reporting Feature is the Profit & Loss Report. Now, that may sound like a lot of work, but with TruckLogics we guarantee that the whole process is painless and paperless. That’s because TruckLogics automatically pulls the data from your Trip Sheets and Chart of Accounts, giving you the numbers you need to do business smarter, but without the extra work.

You can run a P&L Report for any date range to see where your bottom line stands, and you can even look at reports for a specific set of trucks or a single vehicle.

The whole reporting process can be done in 5 easy steps:

Step 1: Choose a time period.

Step 2: Choose a year.

Step 3:
Choose the vehicles.

Step 4: Specify what quarter, month, week, or date range to include in the report.

Step 5: Click Generate Report, and like magic, a report is born!

This report gives you a breakdown of miles, income, expenses, and revenue for whatever time frame you choose without all the hassle of creating it from scratch. We designed this feature to be as fast and efficient as possible because we understand that in the transportation industry, time is money! And this reporting feature definitely saves you a lot of time, and therefore money!

But wait, there are even more reports!

With TruckLogics you can also run a customer report that gives you top customers in terms of revenue and several different unit reports.

TruckLogic’s unit reports can give you...

  • Detailed truck reports:
This report shows you a detailed report of miles run, truck expenses, fuel purchased, miles per gallon, and rate per mile for a certain time period for each truck in your fleet.

  • Unit license expiration dates:
This report lists all truck and trailer license expiration dates.
  • Detailed trailer reports:
This report lists license and insurance expenses done for each trailer.
  • Unit insurance expiration dates:
And finally, this report lists all the truck and trailer insurance expiration dates

Never forget another expiration date! Once you’ve added it, TruckLogics remembers and will remind you with quick email reminders, if you so choose.

IFTA Reporting

To save you even more time and headaches, TruckLogics also offers several IFTA reports. Generate fuel tax summaries, fuel purchase reports, equipment list reports, and trip reports all from the same program.

You can even generate a complete state-specific quarterly IFTA return to mail to your base jurisdiction. That’s definitely a time-saver, especially with the 1st Quarter IFTA deadline yesterday! If you didn’t have a chance to file, TruckLogics is the fastest way to get your return done asap. And the sooner you file, the lower the penalties.

Want to experience TruckLogics’ Reporting Feature first hand? Sign up for a 30 day free trial at TruckLogics.com, or call one of our fantastic Support Crew members at 704.234.6946 for a free demo to see all that TruckLogics can do for your business!
