Trucking Nation Podcast: 8. State Associations, Flying Trucks, & Trucker Fitness

How are your Trucking Nation?

January has been just an exciting month in the Trucking Industry and this week was one of the best. So of course I had to bottle up all the good stuff to talk about and record it on a nice neat Podcast ;)

Before I get started, make sure you start your free trial of TruckLogics.com. It is the best program available for you to manage your entire trucking business, where ever the road takes you. TruckLogics is easy to use and provides every feature you could ever need to keep your business running nice and smooth.

Here's The Overview
I had to mention the State of the Union Address and offer a different perspective of the event. There was a lot going on during the broadcast that I just had to bring up real quick. Then I move into some more government type topics including - State Associations and what they can do for you. Here are all the links mentioned in this segment of the podcast:

ExpressTaxFilings.com - 1099s & W-2s are due to contractors/employees by the end of January and ExpressTaxFilings provides everything you need to get them out on time.

What's Happening In Your World
For the 2nd segment of the show, I talk all about some really amazing things happening in the industry. First was Mike Ryan's new world jump record in a semi truck + trailer. This did happen a month or so ago and I'm kicking myself I didn't know about this sooner.

The jump record, set by Mike Ryan, is 83ft 7in

Now that is with a truck plus the trailer, and oh did I not mention there was a Formula 1 racing car driving under him when he went flying through the air? Amazing! The stunt was for a viral marketing campaign by EMC and Lotus F1 Team & Hopkins Motorsport and I must say it was awesome.

This stunt was just a joy to watch, and they have a Making Of.. video that includes like 20 different camera angles of the stunt so you don't miss any of the high flying action. I'm just going to stop hyping it up and let you actually see what I mean:

Highway Hank Donates Truck To Trucking Museum
Next was a topic very close to my heart: Highway Hank donates his 1981 KW to the Iowa-80
trucking museum. I saw the article on OverdriveOnline and it just took me back to when I was just itty bitty and my grandpa took me to see a truck show and Highway Hank was there with that truck. I have a picture somewhere and I'm going to try my hardest to find it. It was just a special memory of my childhood, and now not only myself, but everyone can visit Hanks famous truck and relive old memories or create new ones of their own.

Volvo Launches 2nd Season of "Welcome To My Cab"
There are a few entertainment topics to mention. Volvo has launched, the 2nd season of "Welcome To My Cab". The first episode is up on YouTube and it features a colorful character who's truck is as bright as his personality. Tim Baumgartner is featured in the first show and is the proud owner of the "Freedom Flyer" - one gorgeous bright yellow truck painted with the heart and sole of his patriotism. I really like this series because it gives you a chance to see all the cool stuff inside and the history of the truck.

I had to mention some IFTA Deadline Reminders. If you need to file your 4th Quarter IFTA, go to ExpressIFTA.com and have it done quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Trucker Fitness
The final segment of the show was dedicated to trucker health and fitness. Getting quality rest is important to keep your mental game strong. If you are having trouble sleeping because of the noise around you, try listening to nature sounds. I know it might not sound like it would work, but I'm telling you it will really make a difference and help you relax. Here is a link to the CDLlife review of the Rain, Rain App I mentioned in the podcast.

For one of the best resources for custom trucker workouts and meal ideas, I recommend checking out HealthyTrucker.net. There are videos on how to use your truck to help you work out, healthy meals you can cook in the cab, and great advice on how to stay healthy on the road. It is just an amazing place to go to find workouts and meals that are customized for a trucker.

I really enjoyed this episode and I want to thank you so much for listening. Every show is a surprise of topics and issues, so you never know what's going to happen - a lot like the trucking industry. Again, thank you so very much for joining me this week, Trucking Nation. Remember you get what you give in this world, so try to be kind and enjoy the ride. Talk to you soon - Misty Noel

TruckLogics Order & Dispatch Features: Which Should You Use?

What’s the difference between an Order and a Dispatch?

Well, Trucking Nation, I’m glad you asked.

In TruckLogics, the Order and Dispatch features are similar: they’re both used to input load details & charges. But it’s their differences that we’ll explore today.

This quick guide will help you figure out which feature you should use and when.

Note: If you have an account for 1-2 trucks, the Order feature is not available. In this case, the Dispatch feature can be used for all functions.

Order: In TruckLogics, an order is what many refer to as a load.

Use the Order feature to input customer, trip, and freight details for a load that you aren’t yet ready to assign a driver or truck to. Once the order details are stored in the system, you can always dispatch it at a later time by quickly assigning the driver, truck & trailer that will transport the load.

This feature is best to use when:
  • You want to enter order details in advance, before the order is ready to be dispatched (sent to a driver).
  • You want to quote a client. By entering the customer’s information, the pick up & drop off locations, and the order charges, you can estimate and adjust the cost of the trip and send to clients for approval. Since the order hasn’t been dispatched, you can keep editing the order information until you and the client agree on the terms.

Dispatch: Assigning the order (load) to a driver, truck & trailer.

As mentioned above, you can quickly dispatch existing orders by choosing your driver and equipment from your Address Book & Truck Zone.

-OR- you can use the Dispatch feature as a shorter way to create an order. Since all of the order information fields are on the same screen, this is the fastest, simplest way to input your load information.

This feature is best to use when:
  • You need to create an order that is ready to be assigned to a driver.
  • If you need to enter load information, but you don’t want to notify the driver or don’t know who the driver will be yet, use the Order feature to store the load details & charges. Dispatch it later when you’re ready.

For a play-by-play on how to use these features, check out this video:

Still not sure which feature to use? Just ask our Support Crew. They’re available 24/7 in our sunny hometown of Rock Hill, SC. They’d be happy to answer your questions, or even give you a free, live tutorial on how to use the program.

Call them at 704.234.6946 or email them at support@trucklogics.com. And if you still don’t have an account yet, what are you waiting for!? Start your free trial now and see what you’ve been missing out on. Use the promocode NEW for 30 days of TruckLogics and ProMiles free.

The code expires January 31st, so don’t wait! You snooze, you lose.

Trucking Nation Podcast 7. Vaping, Emergencies, & Something For The Ladies

Just noticed the title of this podcast is super random, and it rhymes. Got to love the little things in life;)

The Trucking Nation Podcast is brought to you by TruckLogics.com. Whether you are an Independent or a Leased Owner-Operator, you can manage your entire business in one place for less that $5 a month. Check it out and start your free trial today!

Let's Start The Show
How are you Trucking Nation? It has been a super cold week here in South Carolina, so I'm glad I have a warm studio to record in. I have an amazing show for you this week full of exciting stuff. I talk about smoking vs. vaping, what to do in three different types of emergency situations, then I close out with something special for all my Lady Truckers out there and a few deadline reminders. Seriously what is a Trucking Nation podcast without some deadline reminders?

So here is the rundown of the show with all the links and info.

Smoking vs. Vaping
This has been a very popular topic here in the Trucking Nation studio. One of our producers has been sporting a smoking commitment for a long time and wanted to try and change his habits. He heard about vaping and realized life is too short not to give it a shot. He did his research and talked to the experts at the store, started vaping, and never looked back. So we were having a conversation about differences he has noticed and how he has been able to step down to lower and lower nicotine levels. I could really tell a difference not only in the fact that he didn't smell like cigarettes anymore, but his skin improved and so did his health.

Just think, no more cigarette butts to deal with, no more smell, and all the money you will save. When switching to vaping, there is the initial cost of the pen and maybe a larger cartridge, but the liquid is really inexpensive. You can even get vaping liquid with higher nicotine concentration and step down bit by bit until you use nicotine-free liquid. I just think it is a better alternative to those patches and gum.

First Aid Kits & Emergency Situation
It is very important to have a first aid kit. If you have one and haven't opened it in a while, check it and make sure you're not missing anything. I got one of the big daddy first aid kits that would be perfect for every situation; even a zombie apocalypse. A well-stocked first aid kit comes in handy in most emergency situation. There are three of these types of situations I talk about in this podcast:
 Heart Attacks
 Hypothermia
 Delivering Babies.

I honestly didn't know that emergency baby delivering came up too often in trucking news, but boy was I wrong. So it is good to at least have some general knowledge of how you can help until the medical cavalry arrive.

Something for the ladies
The Women In Trucking Association is looking for female drivers to be part of their Image Team. It is a great opportunity to represent women in trucking and be a positive role model. Then I go into a bit of a chit chat about items to have in your travel bag.

I love a good What's In My Bag Tag (don't worry if you're not sure what that is, it's basically people showing what is in their bag on YouTube). So I thought I would make a few suggestions on key items that would be perfect for the Lady Trucker on the go:
travel sizes of your favorite shower stuff
  extra towel
  baby wipes
  shower shoes
hand sanitizer (the world is dirty, remember that)
  face moisturizer with sunscreen

I have perfected the art of the Less-Than-A-Minute-Face. Time isn't something I have a good gasp of still. So I put together three key items that you can carry with you to give you a fresh face look that is super easy. And no brushes are needed; your fingers work best anyway for applying most makeup. Here are the three items:
  tinted moisturizer with sunscreen
  mascara
tinted lip balm or cream blush

Those few items are all you need for a nice fresh face look if you like to wear makeup and they won't take up much room in your travel bag.

Deadline Reminders
Don't forget that 4th Quarter IFTA is due at the end of the month. You can file your IFTA on ExpressIFTA.com and be done with it in no time.

If you don't want to deal with your IFTA Filing, give Truck Services of North America a call and they will be able to take care of it for you. You can contact TSNAmerica via phone: 803-386-0320.

W2s and 1099s are due to employees/contractors by the end of the month. You can create them quick, fast, and in a hurry for your employees at ExpressTaxFilings.com. It super easy; you just enter, follow the prompts, and enter the information. If you have any questions contact the ExpressTaxFilings support professionals via phone: 704-839-2270 or email: support@expresstaxfilings.com

Thank you so much for listening! A new episode is out every week. Remember Trucking Nation, you get what you give in this world, so try and be kind and enjoy the ride. I will talk to you soon - Misty Noel ;)

TruckLogics Routing: Dispatching Multiple Stops & Route Optimization Features

It’s time to step into the 21st century of dispatch technology!

Introducing TruckLogics latest feature. It will help you efficiently create a dispatch with multiple stops and optimize your route to trim mileage!

Let’s head over to the Dispatch Board and have a look.

Add Multiple Stops

When creating a new dispatch, you can now add multiple consignees (destinations) to your trip. You can even go back and edit an existing dispatch to add or delete stops along the route.

Here’s how. After entering your first consignee, click the +Save & Add Another button to add another stop on the route. You can then enter another consignee, drop off location, and delivery date & time. For bonus time-saving points, select the contact from your address book.

Or if it’s a new client, simply click +Add to enter their information and save it in your Address Book for future use.

Now simply lather, rinse, repeat for each additional stop. Keep clicking +Save & Add Another until all consignees are added to the dispatch.

Optimize Your Trip

Are your stops out of order? It doesn’t take a program to tell you that traveling from Ohio to New Jersey to Kansas is a waste of time and fuel.

If you added the consignees out of order, no problem! Our trip optimization feature allows you to reorganize the order of your stops without any fuss. Simply click the View Routing Order icon and then drag and drop your destinations into a new, more economical order.

Watch Support Crew member Demetri do it in seconds in the video below.

Of course, when you reorder your stops, the total mileage for your trip is bound to change. No worries on that front either! You won’t need to whip out your calculator, just press a single button!

Recalculate Mileage

Within the Dispatch Board, the total trip mileage can be calculated in the Miles section. If you’ve rearranged the stops in your trip, you will be prompted to recalculate the miles here.

Just click the Recalculate Miles button, and the new total trip mileage will be automatically determined using either Google Maps or ProMiles (whichever you choose).

  • Pro Tip: Use ProMiles professional routing for the most accurate mileage estimate. Unlike Google Maps, ProMiles takes road restrictions for trucks into account, so you can estimate trip costs more precisely and quote your clients with confidence.
Once you’ve recalculated your total trip mileage, you’re ready to update the dispatch to save your changes, and then move on with your life.

Creating a dispatch, editing your stops, and optimizing your mileage shouldn’t be a hassle. That’s why TruckLogics incorporated these new features to make the process simple.

As a cloud-based program, we’re constantly adding new features by popular demand. If you have an idea for a new feature, call the Support Crew at 704.234.6946 or shoot us an email at support@trucklogics.com. After all, TruckLogics was created based on user feedback, and we’ll continue to recreate it and incorporate YOUR brilliant ideas!

Want to try it out? Claim your free 30 day trial of TruckLogics with ProMiles by signing up with promocode NEW.

Happy Dispatching!

Trucking Nation Podcast: Resolutions, De-Stress Hacks, & Deadline Reminders

How are you Trucking Nation? Being away for 2 weeks is too long, but I'm back and have a wonderful show for you today. Now let's start with my trademark intro....

If you don't know, you will know now - I'm Misty Noel, your Trucking Nation Podcast Hostess. Whewww what a title ;) For my first show of 2015, I chose to tackle some important topics for my dearest Trucking Nation like stress, anxiety, and the always important health issue. New Year's Resolutions are first up, then a few news article reviews from Truckload Authority, and a good ol'talk on video cameras being used in cabs to collect data. Video data is going to be a very important topic coming up here real soon in the trucking industry, if it isn't already.

New Year's Resolutions
Have you given up on making New Year's Resolutions? Don't do that...you can always keep your resolutions, and I have some great advice on how to achieve each one. Well most of them anyways, we all break a few, right? In the podcast I go over the history of resolutions, and wouldn't you know it, they are not something that was recently created by money hungry marketing firms! Most of my resolutions deal with getting healthy and then there is: I'm not going to be late for work, I'm going to watch the sun rise and set every day I can (you never know when you won't get that chance anymore) and my last one is to just be more positive and enjoy life. We only get one life to live, and in 2015, let's rock it.

For the best resources on being a healthy trucker, head on over to healthytrucker.net. They are the best for workout videos, recipes, and advice to changing bad habits. It's one of my favorites and I highly recommend it if getting healthy is one of your main goals this year.

News Articles in Truckload Authority
The other day, I was sitting in the studio and came across a magazine - Truckload Authority. I'm always looking for more trucking mags to read, and this one really delivered some good articles. The magazine is published by the Truckload Carriers Association, and it is one of the best ones I have read. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a good read and some informative articles that don't bore you to death.

Dealing with Stress & Anxiety As A Trucker
For the latter half of the show, it's time to chat about some de-stress hacks and dealing with anxiety as a trucker. When I was researching, there wasn't really and de-stress hacks that would work for a trucker. I mean I highly doubt a trucker will light a few aroma therapy candles and lie down and put on a lavender eye mask. It is a highly effective way to de-stress, but c'mon, truckers aren't going to believe it. So I created some great de-stress hacks just for you Trucking Nation. Here are my favorites I mentioned:
Count backwards from 20
Hum We Are The Champions by Queen
Take a walk
Find a happy place
De-Stress ball

Then we move onto the topic of Anxiety. I personally have really bad anxiety and in my research I found there really isn't a lot of talk about how to deal with anxiety as a trucker. Your surroundings are constantly changing and you deal with so much on the road and no one has really addressed this topic. You might even have anxiety issues and not even realize that is what it is. So I go over some great ways to decrease anxiety and what to do during an anxiety attack when you're out on the road.

January Deadline Reminders
There are a few really important deadlines for the end of January. First you have your 4th Quarter IFTA due by the end of the month. You can get it done right now over at ExpressIFTA.com.

If you don't want to deal with it and would rather have a professional handle your IFTA filing, Truck Services of North America is exactly who you need to call. I talk about this business all the time on my show and that is because they are so great. They can take care of everything you need to stay compliant including: UCR, IRP, every authoritiy under the sun, trip permits, IFTA filing, startup packages and so much more. Check them out, give'em a call, and I promise you won't regret it.

The other big deadline is a tax one. W-2s and 1099s are due to recipients by the end of the month. If you have employees that you need to file for, you can take care of it all on ExpressTaxFilings.com Everything you need to transmit W-2s and 1099s is there and it will only take you a few minutes.

Alright Trucking Nation, I believe I've gone on long enough. I have a lot of great things planned for 2015; fingers crossed I get to go to MATS and report and post all the trucks, competitions, demonstrations, presentations, just all of it. Thank you so much for listening to the Trucking Nation Podcast and for supporting little ol'me as your overly-positive hostess. Remember you get what you give in this world, so try and be kind and enjoy the ride. I will talk to you all next week - Misty Noel.

That can only mean one thing: it’s crunch time! Time to start completing any trip sheets that may have fallen through the cracks for the past few months. And then time to start calculating your mileage, fuel use, and fuel tax. Just talking about it makes me want to snooze!

Luckily, through the powers of TruckLogics, you won’t have to do most of that stuff! If you’ve been keeping your Trip Sheets in TruckLogics, then we’ve got great news for you– just in time for the 4th Quarter Filing!

Our Automatic IFTA feature has launched, and you can now generate IFTA summary reports OR fully completed IFTA returns with just a few clicks! And even if you are new to TruckLogics, you can still quickly and easily prepare your 4th quarter IFTA return, and every return from here on!

Here’s a run-down on creating your IFTA return. After a few clicks here and a quick review there, you’ll have a completed IFTA return with instructions on how to print and submit to your base jurisdiction. Eureka!

  • Pro Tip: Before you get started, make sure all trip sheets for the 4th quarter (October 1st- December 31st) are completed as TruckLogics will use these to generate the IFTA report. Remember, you can create trip sheets super fast by using ProMiles

To access this brand-new, exclusive Wonder Feature, just go to the IFTA section located along the top menu. This will bring you directly to the IFTA Dashboard, where all the magic happens.

Within the IFTA Dashboard, you can view and edit IFTA returns for all quarters, past and present. This handy menu also displays your total miles, total gallons & MPG for each quarter.

You’ll also notice along the left menu bar IFTA Settings and Business Details. Within the IFTA Settings Tab, you can input your base jurisdiction, IFTA account number, and IFTA signing authority. You must complete this section before you generate your first return.

Once you’ve updated your IFTA Settings and business details, it’s time to generate your IFTA return! To get started, click Start Return under the appropriate quarter.

Now pay close attention, because if you blink, you’re going to miss the next few steps. They go by that fast. Under the IFTA Truck List, choose which vehicle reports you’d like to include in your return by checking the box next to each.

All of the trucks you have stored in Truck Zone will appear here. If you aren’t sure which vehicles to add, click View Log on the far right, and this will open a pop-up with a list of all the vehicle’s dispatches.

Once you’ve selected the vehicles, hit Next to head to the Return Details. Here’ you’ll see a summary of your total mileage, fuel use, and MPG for the quarter. It will also display the total tax owed at the bottom of the page.

Next up: IFTA Tax Due. Here you can see your report financial line-by-line and add any previous credits or refunds to the return. Once you’ve entered these figures (if applicable), you’re ready to head to the final review!

The Summary page allows you to edit any of our information one more time before generating your return. Give it a once over, and after scanning for errors, head to the final frontier: generating your return.

We’ve arrived. Hit the big orange button Download IFTA PDF, and you’re finished! The download will not only contain your completed IFTA report, but also instructions on how to print, sign, and mail the document.

If you need to make any corrections, you can always return to the IFTA Dashboard and create an amended return.
