5 Reasons Fuel Cards Are Better Than Credit Cards

Don’t be fooled by fuel! Even though the price of diesel is steadily dropping (fingers crossed it continues), fuel is still the most expensive part of the business. And last time I checked, you weren’t an oil tycoon, so you can just forget about controlling fuel expenses. However, although you can’t control the price of diesel, you can make managing fuel expenses a little easier. Introducing, the fuel card.

These little pieces of plastic can help you manage the cost of your fuel way better than those money-hungry credit card companies. Don’t believe me, well I’ll give you five reasons to.

Reason 1: Spending Control

One of the greatest things about a fuel card is that you can control everything. If you’re a fleet manager, you can set the limit on how much can be spent, how often purchases can be made, and what driver is allowed to use the card. You can even limit the card to “fuel only” or limit the use of it during off-work hours.

Reason 2: No Expense for Drivers

Not only can you set limits with the card, but your drivers have the freedom of not using their own money to purchase fuel. With a fuel card, your drivers don’t have to worry about paying for fuel out of pocket, sending you their receipts, or waiting for reimbursements. And hey, it might make your drivers feel more secure since they don’t have to carry large amounts of cash.

Reason 3: IFTA Time-Saver

Besides TruckLogics, there’s no better time saver when it comes to IFTA than a fuel card. Regular credit cards give you information such as purchase amount, merchant name, date, and the time. But when you use a fuel card, you can also get information such as odometer readings. Time well saved on filing your IFTA return!

Reason 4: Security

A fuel card is the safest way to purchase fuel. Fleet managers/executives can immediately deactivate a lost or stolen fuel card, limiting the chances of your money wasting away. And we already mentioned, fuel cards record everything from driver ID to time of purchase, keeping all of your information and money safe and secure.

Who doesn’t want to save a little bit of money every time they visit the pump? When you sign up for a fuel card you have the chance to save anywhere between 2¢ and 20¢. And when you’re filling up a hundred-gallon tank, every penny helps.

Merry Christmas: 5 Holiday Road Survival Tips

Hey there, Trucking Nation! Are you gearing up to hit the road this holiday season or are you going to be home? Well, whatever your plans might be, we hope you stay safe.

I know my holiday plans have me traveling from Rock Hill, SC to the mountain state of West Virginia, where I grew up. Are you familiar with interstate 81 near Roanoke, VA? Well if you not, let me just tell you—traffic nightmare. So as I prepare myself for the drive, I thought why not share some safety tips for you guys on how to handle those risky four wheelers out there.

Here are my top 5 tips you to help you survive holiday traffic! Also, a video the TruckLogics team did as a tribute to what truckers see from the rig—just for fun!

1. Check and Maintain Your Vehicle

It never fails, every year I see truckers broken down on the side of the road. It’s just eating away at their deadline. So, to avoid the headache of waiting for a tow truck or a mechanic, prepare your rig for the travel. That means replenishing all the fluids and checking over everything to ensure the life and quality is still good. A little bit of maintenance can go a long way.

2. Be Aware of Blindspots

Now, we know you know that you have pretty big blindspots. I mean you’re only driving a huge truck and trailer. But although you might know, other trucks and four wheelers might not. So take extra caution to make sure you stay out of another truck’s blind spot and use your turn signals to let four wheelers know to get out of your way, or that you’re coming over.

3. Watch Out for Others

I was always taught, it doesn’t matter how well you drive, it’s all about how well the neighboring car does. I think this applies to trucks, as well. You might leave plenty of space, always check your blind spots, reduce speed, and use your turn signals, but that doesn’t mean the other driver does. Four wheelers are notorious for cutting in front of big trucks and then slamming on their brakes without realizing you can’t stop immediately. So, just be cautious of your surroundings and leave plenty of space between you and the rest of the holiday drivers out there.

4. Keep up With the Weather

When traveling for a long distance, from one state to another, the weather can change drastically. For instance, going from the south to the north, can mean going from rain to snow. To stay safe while out there doing the holidays, keep the weather station on in the background or periodically check the weather at pit stops. You’ll know what to expect in terms of weather, helping to keep you safe.

5.  Minimize the Use of Technology

I know, I know, it’s against the law to use your phone while driving and I’m not assuming you do this, but this is just a helpful reminder. Phones can be the biggest distraction for drivers on the road nowadays. It doesn’t matter if you’re texting or just talking on a bluetooth headset, you’re going to be distracted. Multi-tasking really doesn't exist. And this doesn’t just go for you, truckers, four wheelers are bad at following this rule (since it differs in every state). So be sure to keep an eye out for them, as well.

5 Ways to Keep Jolly on the Road this Holiday Season

Trucking Nation, we commend you! Without your dedication, loyalty, and hardwork millions of families wouldn’t be able to exchange presents or share a nice dinner this holiday season. Although people might not say it as often as they should, thank you, truck drivers! America couldn’t do it without you guys.

Here at TruckLogics, we know that you might not be able to spend the holidays with your family this year. And we know it’s a hard time for your family and you, which is

why we thought of five ways to keep you jolly while driving this holiday season. Of course we know that nothing can replace your family, but we do hope these suggestions help!

Thank Goodness for Technology

Now yes, technology can be the bane of our existences some days, but in this occasion it can actually be pretty handy. With communication programs like Skype and FaceTime, you and your family can share laughs and smiles by way of videos. You could use these videos to send a special holiday message, read a holiday story, or partake in the singing of some carols.

On the Road White Elephant Party

So you might not be able to be home to exchange gifts with your family, but isn’t your fellow trucker part of the family too? For this next idea, we suggest getting your trucker family together (those who are in the area near you) and exchange gifts of your own. You could do this white elephant style, where everyone buys a gift and puts it in a big pile to be pulled out at random by someone. From new coffee containers to fast food gift cards, the gift options for your trucker buddies are endless.

Gift of Health

The greatest gift of all is you and your health. While you are away from family members this holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in snacking on food and slumping into a depressed state, which is why we’re here to tell you to snap out of it! Get out and walk, do some exercises and get your heart rate up. Your health is more important to your family than any present could be, so keep that in mind when you pick up another bag of Cheetos.  

Holiday Cards and Pictures

During this time, you’re missing the faces of your family members the most. So why not decorate your truck with pictures and holiday cards? It will remind you of home and help surround you with the people you love. Now of course, pictures can’t replace actually being home but it’s a step in the right direction.

Keep the Traditions

Do you always put up a tree or hang lights around your house? Well, why not do that around your temporary truck home? Buy yourself a mini tree and hang ornaments on it. Or better yet, decorate your entire truck in lights. You’ve seen the decorated trucks on our Facebook page, right? Whatever tradition you are used to celebrating with your family, do it while on the road. It’s a good reminder of home.

5 Ways to Prevent Cargo Theft This Holiday Season

It’s the holidays, a time of “good tidings of great joy,” all until some jerk decides to break into the back of your trailer and ransack the goods. For the last three years, just during the Thanksgiving holiday alone, thieves have stolen an estimated $6 million in cargo. The top items that thieves target are food and beverages, metals (mostly copper) followed by apparel and accessories. So we did some research, and although most seem common sense worthy, we have some tips to help prevent cargo theft this holiday season.

1. Don’t Leave a Load Unattended for too Long

Like we said, pretty standard tip, but it makes a difference. Whenever you’re planning a long trip, check your timeframes and plan accordingly for each stop you’re going to have to make. If you just picked up a load, try driving for an extended period of time. Thieves might have been scouting out a pick-up site and watched what was loaded into your truck. We suggest driving for a little while to deter the thieves from following you. And if you do stop, don’t leave your truck for too long. Thieves are looking for an easy steal.

2. Park in Well-lit, Secure Areas

If you have to make a pit stop, find a location that is well-lit and has security cameras. The top three locations thieves target are parking lots, warehouses, and truck stops. So be extra cautious and pick a spot to rest that is known for its security. This is where planning a route comes in handy. And as we mentioned in the last point, don’t leave your cargo for too long.

3. Don’t Brag About the Cargo You’re Hauling

Fakes, pretenders, and deceivers are everywhere. Theft rings are wanting to hear what you’re hauling, and if it’s something they’re interested in, well congrats—you’re their next target. So keep things to yourself!

4. Deter and Lock Thieves out

Deterrence is the greatest defense against thieves. Anything that slows them down will disinterest them from stealing from you. Items like air brake valve locks, steering mechanism locks, GPS tracking devices, etc. can go a long way in protecting your cargo. Oh yeah, don’t forget to lock your trailer! Buy yourself a heavy-duty lock and put it on your trailer before you go anywhere else.

5. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

One of the best things you can do to protect your cargo is to be smart and aware of your surroundings.  Lock your truck, every. single. time. you get out of it. If your gut is telling you something doesn’t feel right, it’s probably because it’s true. Trust yourself and your judgement. If a situation doesn’t feel right, get out of there. If you feel like you’re being followed, call 911.

Historic Day or Bust? E-Logs and What to Expect!

The time has come! Today is the day that electronic logging devices, also known as e-logs, are set to go into effect. “Hooray!” (Noted sarcasm) Now of course, we are all for more safety on the road for our truck drivers out there; y’all are the bread and butter of America. But, do you really think another mandate from good ole Uncle Sam is really helping matters? OK, before we go off on too much of a rant, let’s just tell you what ELDs are, what they’re supposed to do, and what you can expect. And, oh yeah, if you drive a ‘99 Freightliner, good for you, man.

What are ELDs?

Long form—ELDs are electronic logging devices and a device the FMCSA (big wigs of government) believe will improve the safety of our roadways by monitoring a driver’s compliance with the hours-of-service regulations. So basically it’s a really fancy piece of software, a handful of men’s (and women’s) opinions, and a trucker’s fight to stop driving sleepy. OK, maybe it’s not exactly that, but it is a safety movement to prevent truck drivers from forcing themselves to push through the night to deliver a load, as well as to lower the amount of accidents on the road.

We fully support protecting our truck drivers, but why does the new law mandate only making these requirements for certain truckers and trucks? Getting ahead of ourselves.

Purpose of These Contraptions

So ELDs, e-logs, whatever you wish to call them, are a device used to automatically record a trucker’s driving time. It monitors the hours the engine has been running, the movement of the vehicle, miles driven, and the location of the rig. Scott Darling, the FMCSA Acting Administrator believes that, “This is a win for all motorists on our nation’s roadways. Employing technology to ensure the commercial drivers comply with federal hours-of-services rules will prevent crashes and save lives.”

What to Expect from ELDs

The mandate specifies that this new ruling applies to all drivers, except those who keep a record of duty status in eight or fewer days out of every 30 working days, drivers in drive-away and tow-away operations, and truckers with vehicles older than a 2000 model. Some safety ruling if you ask us? Shouldn’t it apply to everyone if you really want to enforce safety? How do these mandates ever come into existence?

But long story short, the laws the law so we must comply. You must be able to have a record of your date, time, and location, including your engine hours and vehicle miles. You must have this device installed and in use by December 16, 2017. And when it’s installed, you’ll be required to transfer data during roadside inspections, “on demand” via a wireless web-based service, email, or bluetooth.

What’s the Verdict, You Ask?

Although this might be useful for the larger carriers, this mandate tremendously hurts the small fleets and independent owner-operators. OOIDA President Jim Johnson has a few words he would like to say to the FMCSA, “This rule has potential to have the single largest, most negative impact on the industry than anything else FMCSA has done.” Don’t worry, OOIDA will be fighting for you truck drivers in court. And furthermore, this is a violation of privacy! Johnson continues his comments to say, “While they choose to call it electronic logging systems, in reality it is an electronic monitoring system for law enforcement purpose. They can’t even do this to known criminals without a court issued warrant.”

So for now, we’ll agree that this is the law and we equip our trucks with the latest ELD, but that doesn’t mean we give up the fight to overturn this. All we can ask of you, truckers, is to hang in there and hope that this gets sorted out. At TruckLogics, we always want you to be the safest you can be on the road. Don’t Stall: Get Your Diesel Engine Ready for Winter

You might be the kings of the highways and rulers of the lanes, but when winter strikes, you and your truck will be sitting in a garage if you don’t prepare properly. 

That’s right, the big rigs of the roadways can be stopped by the coldest and lowest of temperatures. 

So before you go hauling another big load this season, check out these tips below to make sure you’ve covered all of the necessary bases for winterizing your heavy-duty diesel.

Vow to Drive Safely This Winter

1. Be cautious when weather becomes bad, such as rain, sleet, snow, fog, or wind. This can limit your ability to slow down and stop, as well as traction for turning and remaining in your lane on the road. 

2. Always bring extra food and water supplies with you during trips. You never know when you’ll need to make an emergency stop to let the weather calm down. Also bring extra clothing and blankets to keep warm.

3. Sun protection is a must. Snow and sun do not mix well and can cause deceptive winter glares to occur while you’re driving. Use sun sleeves, window covers, and sunglasses to help reduce the occurrence of a glare.

4. During long periods of cold weather and limited sunlight, be aware that seasonal affective disorder can occur. Monitor your mood, as mood swings are a sign of SAD occurring.

Keep Your Truck Working all Winter Long

1. Diesel fuel contains paraffin wax, which can cause the fuel to gel in low temperatures. If this occurs, you will experience engine failure. Check the grade of your fuel—fuel with a higher cetane number will make it easier for your vehicle to start in cold weather. 

2. Another thing to remember is to always top off your fuel tank at the end of the day. This will help reduce the amount of condensation that collects due to the wintry air.

3. Check and make sure your cooling system is running well. Although it’s already cold outside, your engine still needs to cool. Be sure to get your engine properly inspected to discover if there are any problems with the cooling system, heater, radiator, hoses, and belts.

4. Cold, wintry conditions drain batteries! Now is the time to check the age of your battery and replace it if it’s close to the end of its lifespan, which is typically about 48 to 72 months.

5. Take a look at the overall health of your tires. Are there any odd patterns apparent on the tread of your tires? This means your tires aren’t wearing evenly, which can cause poor alignment, worn bearings, and other failures. Also, during the cold months, tires tend to lose pressure. This can decrease your fuel economy so be sure to keep them pumped full.

6. Is there any sign of snow melting around the wheel hub region? If so, this might be an indication that the wheel bearings are over-heating.

7. Keep your wiper fluid full and purchase new windshield wipers to make sure you have maximum visibility during rain, sleet, or snow.  

8. Don’t let your brakes freeze up this season either, so be sure to check on your air dryer. If it’s not functioning properly, your brakes could fail.

What the Cargo? Updated CSA and Other Regulations

Trucking Nation, say goodbye to CSA and hello to other regulations! Now before you shoot the messenger, we’re just here to help you get back to driving instead of worrying about what Congress is enacting now.

Congress, per usual, has once again changed the regulations for the trucking industry. And of course, the regulations have to come packaged in the most confusing set of words we’ve ever seen. So, to make the overtly confusing legislation more applicable for actual humans, we decided to tell you about all the update regulations changes ourselves. Well, we attempted to anyways—Congress sure does enjoy making stuff unnecessarily difficult. I mean the bill is about 1,300 pages long.

FAST Act—The Highway Bill That Slashed the CSA

First and foremost, the FAST Act, as it was ironically dubbed, rid the trucking industry of the DOT’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability—you know it as CSA. The FAST Act lets carriers hide their percentile ranking from public view, and it also requires the FMCSA to identify the program’s fault. So basically, the CSA program is sleeping until FMCSA can implement a “corrective action plan.” Great win for the trucking industry!

Here’s a quick look at what else changed with the updated bill: 

What's Out:

  • 21 and Under- The bill requires the FMCSA to study 18-to-21 year old CDL holders who are former members of the military or reserves. This comes in discussion of allowing these truckers to drive in interstate commerce.
  • Size/Weight- No mention of truck size and weight standards made it into the discussion of the bill, although some lawmakers allegedly pushed for raising the minimum requirements.
  • Tolls- The original bill called for tolling on some existing interstate lanes and for the money to be used outside the interstate system, but that didn’t make it in this updated version.

Response to the New Bill

Trucking Nation responded with praise towards the new bill—finally lawmakers got something right. As for FMSCA? Well, let’s just say they were less than thrilled to hear the news. They complied with the new bill, removed the CSA Safety Measurement System, and issued the following statement:

“As of December 4, 2015, pursuant to the FAST Act of 2015, much of the information previously available on [FMCSA] website related to property carriers’ compliance and safety performance will no longer be displayed publicly.”

OK, that part didn’t sound too harsh, until FMCSA went on further to emphasize that is it not “prohibited from displaying all of the data,” specifically when it comes to inspection and violation data. How sneaky!

So what’s next for these new regulations? Well as of right now, it passed the U.S. Senate by a whopping 83-16 vote late on Thursday, December 3rd. Now it’s waiting for Mr. President to put his signature on it before it becomes an actual piece of legislation. We would ask how long one piece of legislation takes to sign but asking is pretty futile when it comes to the bigwigs of government. Anyways truckers, get ready for some new regulations but an overall improvement on the roadways.

Then, from your dispatch summary, click on your Routing tab and voila! Behold the information of your route.

What It Tells You

The information you are provided includes:
  • Trip Miles from pickup to delivery
  • Trip minutes without stops
  • Trip minutes with stops
  • Toll charges (if any)
  • Route plan with estimated arrival time
  • But wait there’s more!
The Fuel Optimization tab has a lot to it that wouldn’t be justified in a single bullet point. The Fuel Optimization is a complete breakdown of fuel prices, expected gallons burned, total IFTA tax, average MPG, estimated trip savings, and fuel stop options along your route.

What You Can Do with the Information

Now that you have the info, what do you do with it? Well my friend, you can predict the future. What are budgets if not a prediction with some wiggle room for more spending? Other than an expense budget, you can know: directions, where you will stop, the cost per mile, and scheduled pickup and delivery times (if that option is available) all before you even hit the road. The application for this knowledge is endless.

December Updates Have Arrived!

Travel Planner with Fuel & Route Optimization

To see this feature in action, check the option to calculate miles using ProMiles when entering your load/dispatch information. When you click on your Routing from your dispatch summary, you will see the new Travel Planner tab that will break down average fuel rates for the area, toll charges, and how long the route will take with or without stops.

Dispatch Documents

Why only have a documents tab on your load summary, when you can have it on your dispatch summary too? When you create a load, the documents tab will transfer to the dispatch summary so you can quickly access your invoice, BOL, POD, and other documents to send to your customers.

Change Your Settings without Leaving the Page

When you need to update your load, dispatch, or invoice settings, you don’t have to leave the page and go into your settings. Now you can simply click on the Settings option (located on the top right corner) from the page you are on.

Driver Settlement Pay Percentage

You asked for it, we did some coding magic, and now you have new payment options for your drivers. Pay drivers by percent of hauling, percent of hauling + FSC, or percent of total income. Check out this new feature when you create your driver settlements.  

Return to Base

When you return to base after delivering a load, those empty miles can be recorded on your trip sheet for that specific load. Now of course the loaded miles will show too, but now all your miles associated with that load (from start location to pickup/delivery, all the way back to home base) will be on your trip sheet. This new feature can be accessed when generating the trip sheet for your dispatch.

The entire program has been outfitted with faster technology and takes trucking management to a whole new level.
