Trucking Nation Podcast 4. Happy Thanksgiving Trucking Nation

Happy Thanksgiving Trucking Nation! I do hope you aren't having to work too hard on this day of thankfulness. I have a special Thanksgiving episode for you. And if you asked me what I am thankful for this Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for every trucker that keeps our great nation moving forward. Sappy, but true. Ok let's get to the show....

First up today, I had a lovely interview with Amber from Truck Services of North America. She shared a bunch of info on what TSNAmerica can provide for all of you in the Trucking Nation. And she was just so sweet. You can visit the Truck Services of North America website for more info; here is the direct link to all their services. And a big thankyou to Amber for stopping by the studio and answering a few questions. For her first interview, she was just fabulous. Might just have to invite her back, especially when it gets closer to the next IFTA deadline.

I briefly mentioned, but if you need to file your 2290 HVUT quick, fast, and in a hurry, is exactly where you need to go. If you need any assistance in Spanish or Russian, they got that covered too! You can contact their amazing customer support team, located right here in Rock Hill, SC via phone: 704-234-6005 or 24/7 email support:

A Trucker's Thanksgiving
I love to cook, and at one point in my life, I had to learn to cook in a truck cab and I picked up a few tips & tricks along the way. I made a delicious Thanksgiving meal, including dessert, that any trucker can make in his cab. I would definitely have some extra bread because you will have plenty of left overs for sandwiches. I even have a secret ingredient (it's soda...but shhhh don't tell anyone). Check out the recipe and you won't believe how easy it is...

Big Rig Cooking: A Trucker's Thanksgiving

Before I let you go, you know I have to show the Trucking Nation some much deserved appreciation. In the podcast I read a poem I wrote for you all, sappy again but it's sweet, and I just wanted you know that myself and everyone here at TruckLogics is truly thankful for everything you thanklessly do to keep us going. I wish you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving, talk at you next week! - Misty Noel

Big Rig Cooking: A Trucker's Thankgiving

How are you Trucking Nation? The weather here in South Carolina is just dreadful. Even though the weather is not too great, I won't let it get me down today. I have just the thing to make you feel all warm and in the holiday spirit. What could it be you ask? The perfect Thanksgiving dinner you can make on the road; including dessert! Let's get started, so you can get cooking....

What you will need:
- An electric skillet or crock pot
- foil
- a knife to core the apple
- a spoon
- Fully cooked, pre-sliced turkey breast, or ham
- 2 fresh vegetables ( I used carrots and green beans) *you really want to choose fresh vegetables because canned veggies have a lot of additives that are not good for you.
- a can of Coke or Dr.Pepper

Only if you want to list:
- pre-diced onions to add on top of the green beans
- honey
- cinnamon

* I used an electric skillet, so that is what I will be referencing, but a crock pot would work the same way.

To make clean up a breeze, line your skillet with foil. I did two layers in an X pattern for durability.
Set the temperature to a low-medium heat. And while that is heating up, you want to core the apple and wrap it in foil, leaving the top open.
Drizzle honey and sprinkle cinnamon in the center of the apple.

Let's Get Cooking:
The turkey breast I got is about a pound. It will be enough for 2 people plus leftovers to make sandwiches the next day (bonus!).
In your pre-heated skillet, place the turkey breast in the center, then place the apple in. Next throw in your veggies.

Now that's it for the cooking, but wait we haven't added the secret ingredient. To give everything a nice flavor and to keep the turkey moist, I pour in half a can of Coke. If you have never cooked with soda before, trust me it is delicous. Your food won't taste like Coke, I promise, but it will have a sweet and savory effect on the food.

After you pour in the Coke, just put on the lid and let it cook on lo-medium heat for about an hour, then you can just turn it on down to simmer and eat when you're ready.

It will look like this....Yummmmm

Super easy right? Everyone here in the office, couldn't believe how simple it was. Every ingredient can be found at any grocery store and you can mix things up the way you want. All in all this meal is actually pretty healthy, besides the Coke. I hope you enjoy this heart warming meal and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Driver Pay: Easy Trip Settlements with TruckLogics

It’s time for a #MoneyMonday blog!

With so many fees, percentages, deductions & reimbursements, settling your drivers and calculating their pay can be a huge headache, particularly if payroll and accounting aren’t your strong suit. (and unless you’re an accountant, why would they be!)

The TruckLogics Trip Settlement feature makes driver pay simple. It allows you to precisely calculate the total owed, without having to do any calculations yourself.

And while calculating the pay, you can still itemize specific expenses for more accurate accounting. It’s the easiest way to pay your contract employees! Plus the pay automatically gets logged in your Chart of Accounts as a payroll expense, and is immediately visible in a Profit & Loss report.

Let’s dive right in.

First, head over to your dispatches and select the order that you’d like to settle. Once you’ve clicked on a dispatch, then select the “Trip Settlements” tab. From here you can update the driver pay details at any time.

1. Hauling Charges

To begin the settling process, enter the hauling charges. If you’ve already set-up your Driver Pay preferences in Driver Settings, this part will already be completed with the Driver’s standard rate. However, you can still alter the information if necessary.

If the driver pay is not already saved in your settings, then you can choose to pay per mile, a percentage, or manually. If you choose to pay per mile, you will also need to choose the mileage values: by dispatch miles, by trip sheet miles, or by the invoice. Once you’ve selected that, enter the rate, and TruckLogics will create a subtotal of the hauling charges.

2. Fuel Surcharge Fees

After entering the hauling charges, it’s time to enter a fuel surcharge fee, if necessary. If not, you can skip this portion of the settlement. Choose your FSC calculation method from the dropdown menu: flat fee, percentage, or per mile.

3. Accessorial Fees

The nice thing is, you can add as many as you need, or none at all. Select the kind of accessorial you’d like to add to the pay. We have stop off, lumper, detention, tarp, and more. Or you can always click “Add New” to create your own accessorial category. After choosing the category, enter the amount. If you need to add more than one, click the “Add Accessorial Fees” button on the left.

4. Reimbursements

Almost done! Time to reimburse your driver for tolls, parking, room & board, or whatever expense they incurred. Simply enter the reason for the reimbursement in the open field, followed by the amount. If you need to add multiple reimbursements, select “Add Another” as many times as you need.

5. Deductions

If you need to dock the driver’s pay for any reason, for a late delivery for instance, here’s the line to do it. Select the reason for the deduction, either “Advance” if you already paid the driver in part, or other to enter another reason. Then enter the amount to deduct, and TruckLogics will subtract it from the total.

Now that you’ve entered all of the fields, just hit save! You’ll see a neat little total at the bottom of the page, so you know exactly what to put on their check.

After saving, you can scroll down to “Upload Trip Documents” to save images of invoices, BOL, or receipts from that trip. Just click “Choose File” and select the file type to upload. To upload multiple files, just select +Add Another Attachment.

And to view your total income/expense details for that order in particular, just scroll to the bottom of the trip settlement page, and select “Trip Net Revenue.”

This will display an itemized graph of your income and expenses for the trip, as well as your total Net Revenue and Revenue per Mile for that trip.

And that’s how it’s done! In total, you can settle your driver and log all trip expenses in just minutes. The itemized expense will also be logged in your Chart of Accounts. You can view all of your driver settlements by going to your Expense Transactions, and sorting through them by the Expense Category “Payroll.”

Trucking Nation Podcast 3 - Capitol Christmas Tree, Winter Survival Kits, & New Tech

How are you Trucking Nation? If you don't know, then you definitely will now, I'm Misty Noel and I'm back with another entertainment packed podcast; sponsored by the wonderful online business management program TruckLogics. I'm finally getting into the groove of things when it comes to this whole podcasting adventure I'm on, and I am so greatful I have you all along for the ride.

This Week
I'm already full of holiday cheer, it's a bit sickening, but I couldn't help myself. The holidays are my favorite time of year. To spread some of my holiday cheer, I have some fun facts about this year's Capitol Christmas Tree Tour. We're talking about the trucks, the trees, and all the happenings. For more information on the tour and everything else, visit the Capitol Christmas Tree webpage.

Better yet, watch the news coverage on the harvesting ceremony and learn some fun tree facts (you never know when it could come up in a conversation, or a trivia game)

Winter Survival Kits
Most of you have winter kits tucked away safely in the cab, but when was the last time you check it to make sure you had everything you need in case of an emergency? It's already too cold for comfort here in Rock Hill, SC and my winter survival kit is definitely not up to par. A lot of trucking associations and Trucking Nation members recommend these items in your winter kit, you know - just in case stuff happens, like a blizzard that shuts down an interstate...remember last year:

- a shovel
- flashlight w/ extra batteries
- battery powered radio
- water
- protein bars
- mini candy bars
- extra hats, socks, gloves, and blankets
- tow chains/rope
- road salt, sand, or kitty litter
- first aid kit
- emergency flares and reflectors
- fluorescent distress flag and whistle to attract attention

And if you want to take that one extra precaution, a portable heater is a great thing have in case of emergency.

New Technology
Detroit (formerly Detroit Diesel) demonstrated a new safety system last week that uses radar to scan the highway in from of a truck to adjust cruising speed, alert drivers of fast closure rate, and break autonomously. Side note: I had to practice saying autonomously over and over again before the podcast; I learned if I said it in a british accent, it came out better.

For more information on this new technology, check out the article on OverDriveOnline. They include a video that shows this new radar tech in action.

Business Spotlight
I have talked about this business a few times in my previous podcasts, I just really love what they do for the Trucking Nation. Truck Services of North America is a full service processing agency that can handle all your compliance needs. And when I say all, I seriously mean everything you could ever need to stay compliant and operable. Check out their entire list of services and packages they have to offer. What truly sets Truck Services of North America apart from other business in their field, is their high standard of customer service. I have seen this team in action, most recently for the IFTA deadline, and they are always polite and respectful of their clients. Quality customer service is a dying artform and this company keeps it alive. Another great aspect of their services, is it is all done over the phone. Give em' a call @ 803-386-0320 for more information.

Well Trucking Nation, I have some great stuff planned for next week's special Thanksgiving Podcast! So be on the look out for that, and I can't wait to talk to you then. Y'all have a great rest of the week, I appreciate everything you do - Misty Noel ;)

TruckLogics Dispatch Management: Streamline Your Operation

If dispatching an order takes you more than 10 seconds, I’m here to tell you, there’s a better way!

We at TruckLogics know, there’s more than one way to stuff a Turkey! (New hashtag, #MetaphorMonday! Catchy, right?) By “stuff a turkey” I mean there are many ways transportation companies manage their dispatches. But there can be only one best way.

Some go old school, just using a clipboard to organize dispatches. Some use an enormous dry erase board, while others prefer pinning to cork boards and maps. And still some use dispatch software that costs more than what you make in a month.

TruckLogics dispatch software combines the affordability of a clipboard with the efficiency of high-end software, all in one easy-to-use package! With TruckLogics, you can dispatch an order with just a few clicks. In fact, TruckLogics users have super buff pointer fingers because most tasks can be performed without any typing, just a bit of clicking. (We’re anti-typing and pro-auto filling!)

Start warming up that index finger, and get ready to dispatch in 10 seconds flat. TruckLogics Dispatch Management software will save you wads of cash, loads of time, and simplify communication between dispatch and drivers.

Unmatched Value

Typically, dispatch management software starts in the range of $30-50 a month and can skyrocket up to thousands of dollars per month! But not TruckLogics. TruckLogics’ price packages start at just $4.95 a month for 1-2 trucks and run up to $24.95 for 8-14 trucks. Fleets larger than 14 trucks can call to discuss pricing options–but you can still expect an unbeatable value!

All of our packages offer unlimited access to our line-up of exclusive features, plus a free 30 day trial with ProMiles! We strive to provide all of the resources your trucking company needs, but at a price your business can afford, no matter the scale of your operation.

Lightening Fast Dispatching

Order creation, dispatching, and invoicing come together in one fast, fluid process within TruckLogics. Our users can complete all three steps in under a minute! But dispatching itself only takes seconds.

And you can’t forget to dispatch an order either, TruckLogics won’t let you! All open orders are visible from the Dashboard, plus you can view all dispatches and their statuses under “All Dispatches.” From there, you’ll be able to see the status of every load with just a glance. You can also sort through dispatches by active, assigned, delivered, and cancelled.

To dispatch an open order, simply click on it to head to the order details screen. From there, select the Dispatch tab along the top. Here’s where it gets complicated-Not! This is where the TruckLogics Address Book & Truck Zone features save the day. Simply select a Driver, Truck, and Trailer from the drop down menu, or select +Add to enter a new driver or equipment to be saved in your account. When choosing from a Driver in your Address Book, you’ll also see their pay rate before assigning the order, again to help you make an informed decision.

When dispatching the driver and equipment, you can also assign a Helper from the same screen if you’re running team drivers, for instance. And at the very bottom of the dispatch page, you can add a Check Call to the order to denote the status, such as starting trip, at pick up, etc.

So we’re up to maybe 10 seconds tops here, perhaps 20 if you’re indecisive like me. But believe it or not, there are ways to make the dispatch process even faster and easier.

  • Customize Driver Preferences: TruckLogics is full of customizable settings that allow you to automate your day-to-day business affairs. Driver preferences is just one example. You can pair a driver with a particular truck and trailer so that when you dispatch, you simply choose the driver, and their truck and trailer will be selected automatically. To customize driver preferences, head over to your Truck Zone, and then select Driver Preferences.

  • Choose the Driver/Truck Closest to the Pick up: Run a Truck Report to view the last location of every vehicle. From there, compare with your Open Orders and their pick-up locations to select the driver/truck closest to the pick-up spot. When you dispatch smarter, it saves time and costs across the board!

  • ProMiles Integration: TruckLogics has integrated with ProMiles professional routing to bring our users the best address-to-address routing available! With the ProMiles add-on, you’ll have access to the most precise mileage estimation available before you even dispatch the order. This will help you better estimate your cost per mile based on the driver’s pay rate, which in turn will help you keep a closer eye on your bottom line.

You can also supply your drivers with the ProMiles directions to help them keep to a strict itinerary and avoid out-of-route miles.

Driver App

Why waste time calling drivers or entering check calls yourself! With the TruckLogics Driver App, you can simplify communication between dispatch and drivers, and you’ll always know the status of the delivery.

Drivers can conveniently login anytime from their iOS or Android device to view all dispatches, along with specific order details and instructions.

They can also use the app to continuously enter a Check Call along their route, which will automatically update the load’s status in your system and notify the end client with an email. Upon delivery, driver’s can capture BOL and proof of delivery, all within the app.

With TruckLogics cloud-based Dispatch software and free App for Drivers, managing your dispatches takes only a fraction of the time, and you can do it anywhere! Our auto-filling features and driver check-calls reduce the amount of data-entry required from you, and help you keep up with your business in real-time.

Start using TruckLogics today for 45 free days of TruckLogics with ProMiles! Simply use promocode THANKS when signing up. Set up is easy, and our Support Crew is more than happy to walk you through it!

Call them at 704.234.6946 for immediate assistance, email them at for 24/7 help, or call and set up a free live demo! They’ll show you how our Dispatch Management Software can help optimize your business operations, no matter its size!

Trucking Nation, how y'all doing today? Misty Noel here, and I'm back with episode 2 of the Trucking Nation Podcast.

This episode is chock full of great information and topped with a big helping of entertainment. I had the amazing opportunity to interview Pete The Planner from He had some great financial advice that relates directly to owner-operators in the trucking industry. You can check out the YouTube channel to see more from Pete. Here are a few of our favorites:

Then I had a wonderful visit with Elena and Bryan from TruckLogics to discuss the latest technology for owner-operators to help manage their business. They related Pete The Planner's information about expenses and creating an emergency fund to a few of the exclusive features offered by TruckLogics. And if you are not sure exactly what TruckLogics is an all-inclusive business management program for owner-operators and fleet managers that cost less than a regular sized combo meal. It's wonderful and seriously has the power to change your entire business management process. Check out the site - , and if you need more info, give em' a call @ 704.234.6948

Before Elena and Bryan left, I had them take the What Kind of Truck Are You? Quiz and they both got MACK. We are a bit sceptical that the quiz is rigged, so give it a try and let us know if you get a different truck. Post your result with #TruckingNation, or leave a comment below.

To finish out the show I shared a few life observations and a reminder about the upcoming UCR and IRP renewals. A Veterans Day Tale

When this day comes every year, time almost stands still. I make a special call to my grandfather and thank him for his service. Our conversation never ends with my simple appreciation, it is only the beginning. Every year for as long as I can remember, my grandfather would tell stories of his service on Veterans Day. I have heard these stories over and over again and never tire hearing them. This morning, he told me one of my favorites and I would love to share it with the entire Trucking Nation as a special appreciation for our Veterans and to honor their service.

He always started with the same opening description of the day...

It was a quiet dark morning. The kind of quiet that can make a man go crazy.
I remember looking over at Sgt. Rosson while in the wheelhouse and noticing the ghost white color of his face. It was at that moment that it hit me. In just a few hours we were going to be in battle and that thought scared me to my core. My buddy Knox, who had been with me since basic, came up and put his arm around me. He handed my me a smoke and said "Here Lear, this might help ease your mind for a moment". It helped for a second, but the view of all the surrounding ships as we move closer to the beaches shocked my mind back to reality. I had to man up quick, because this was a war and I couldn't change anything.
I'm not going to get into the details of the events that followed, Hollywood has done a good job of that. But before we landed on the beaches, before the war really started for us, Knox took one last moment to talk to me. These were the last words he ever said to me, to anyone really, and I will never forget them, no matter how old or far gone my mind becomes.
He said, "Lear, take this letter. Now don't read it unless you know I ain't breathing. They are my final written words to my mother, and some instructions of what to do with my belongings back home. Well, that's the first page, the second page is for my son, make sure he knows I love him. I'm giving this to you because if I don't survive this, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt you will. You're too stubborn to die anywhere else but back in Tennessee. Oh, and I don't know if anyone has told you this, but you should smile more. For the only one in his entire hillbilly family to have all his teeth, you should show them off a bit more while you still can."

Only Knox could make me laugh at such a somber moment in time. I'd like to tell you I never read that letter, but PFC Christopher David Knox bravely fought and died for his country during WWII. When I got back home and opened the letter to know where to deliver it, the opening line was....

See, I knew you were too stubborn. Don't forget to smile hillbilly.

My grandfather still has that letter and opens it every Veterans Day and Memorial Day and just smiles. He tells me every time that he may be a Veteran and considered a hero, but Knox is his hero. He claims if it weren't for Knox, he wouldn't be here for me to call early in the morning every Veterans Day for a story.

To all our veterans, The entire TruckLogics Team and myself salute you for your service, sacrifice, and bravery. Thank you for everything you have done.

TruckLogics Maintenance Tracker: Schedule Tasks, Receive Reminders & Record Expenses

Let’s talk about Maintenance. It’s a dirty job, but everyone’s gotta do it!

From batteries to belts, to rotations and wiper blades, every square inch of your truck and trailer have something to be tweaked, tightened, or changed regularly!

And if you’ve got more than one truck, multiply all of that, and you’ve got a perfect storm of overwhelming details swirling around in your noggin. Quite the recipe for confusion and nasty non-compliance!

With so many details to remember, it’s absolutely vital to remain organized. Missing a single light check can lead to tickets, and even put your business in jeopardy. (You might say, it really puts a wrench into things.) When so much is at stake, you can’t risk relying on post-it notes–or worse–relying on nothing but the memory-capacity of the human brain!

If only there were one place to manage all maintenance tasks, and even better, a place to manage all aspects of your business! Oh right, there is–and we made it!

The TruckLogics Maintenance Tracker was designed to make maintenance maintainable. Whether you’re an owner-operator with one truck & trailer, or a fleet manager with dozens of trucks and trailers to maintain, you can keep track of it all with ease.

Have a gander at the pretty pictures. I’ll show you how to schedule maintenance, receive reminders, and check the status of maintenance tasks, all with a few clicks. Plus you can record expenses and vendor info all at the same time! Now that’s organization, baby.

Dashboard Reminders

From the Dashboard, you can conveniently view all upcoming maintenance tasks. To schedule a new task, click on the +Add New button on the top right, and then select the Maintenance icon. You can also navigate to the Maintenance feature by clicking “Truck Zone” along the top menu.

View Upcoming Maintenance Reminders on the Bottom Right of the Dashboard

Once you’re within the Maintenance Tracker, you can sort through tasks by four categories: Scheduled, Complete, Upcoming, and Past Due Maintenance. Simply select the category on the left-hand menu, and all relevant tasks for trucks and trailers will appear.

Scheduling New Maintenance Tasks

To schedule a new Maintenance Task, select +Add Maintenance button on the top right, then choose to add truck maintenance or trailer maintenance.

This will take you to a new screen to enter the maintenance details. You’ll first enter the Unit Details, which includes the truck or trailer information by simply selecting from your Truck Zone. For trucks, you’ll also enter the current odometer reading. This is important for receiving reminders, so be sure not to skip that step!

Next enter the maintenance Task Details. You can choose a task from our drop-down menu, but if you don’t see it there, you can always click +Add to schedule a new task. If you choose a task from our menu, simply check the box “recurring” if you’d like the receive regular reminders. You can also choose how frequently you’d like the task repeated, whether by date, length of time, or mileage.

If you’re adding a custom maintenance task, click +Add in the Task Details section. A pop-up window will magically appear, in which you’ll enter the task and the due criteria. Sounds fancy, but it’s super easy.

Choose whether you’d like reminders based on a certain length of time, a specific date, or at a certain mileage. OR, you can select the option “Both- whichever is lower” to receive a reminder when you hit 6 months or 5,000 miles, whichever it happens to occur first.

Almost done, just a few more waves of your mouse! Now that you’ve given the truck/trailer info and selected the task and its frequency, it’s time for enter the Last Maintenance details, like the date, odometer reading, and cost incurred from the last time this service was performed. Again, this not only helps you keep precise records for compliance, it also helps TruckLogics provide timely reminders!

Finally, enter the Vendor Details. Choose a preferred vendor from your Address Book, or click +Add to enter vendor details and save them for next time. Don’t forget to hit Save, and you’re finished!

You can edit the task at any time by clicking the Pencil Icon or delete the task by clicking the trash can. The reminders for future tasks will appear on your Dashboard as the date or mileage marker approaches. You’ll never miss an oil change again!

Recording Completed Maintenance Tasks (& Expenses!)

Once you’ve completed the maintenance, record your victory by clicking the Complete Maintenance button. It’s the little wrench with a green check mark.

You’ll be taken to a new screen where you can enter Payment and Cost Details. To enter payment details, select the Payer from your address book, the method of payment, and the Vendor. Don't forget to update the odometer reading at the top of the page, if necessary.

Then enter the Cost information, which will automatically be recorded in your Chart of Accounts and Profit & Loss reports! Choose the cost type (Labor, Parts, Misc, or Other), then input a description of the part or service. Finally enter the cost.

To further itemize the bill, click Add Another Line at the bottom left of the page. This will allow you to record the itemized bill for future reference. Then enter any discounts or tax, and the total expense will be calculated for you. You can also upload a scan of the receipt by selecting Add at the very bottom of the screen.

Finally save, and not only will the Maintenance information be updated, but the cost will be recorded in your Expenses. Just head over to your Chart of Accounts to review the details.

That's the benefit of having all of your business info in one place. In TruckLogics, all of our features connect, working in tandem to eliminate typing and automatically updating information where it's relevant–across the board.

Why have a separate calendar for maintenance reminders AND an accounting program for entering expenses AND an address book stuffed in your glove box for vendor information? Streamline your business and your life by bringing it all together. Record-keeping is much more manageable when you can efficiently upload all of the information in one fell-swoop. Especially when TruckLogics auto-fills most of the fields for you!

Start maintaining your maintenance today with TruckLogics! If you don't have an account yet, sign up for a 30 day free trial! You'll also get ProMiles free through the end of the year too. You can't beat that deal!

And if you've got questions, the Support Crew has answers. Call them at 704.234.6946. They’re also available for 24/7 email assistance at Or set up a free live demo, for a VIP tour through the program.
